General information:

In order to solemnize a marriage in Ukraine, you need to apply to a government body, named “a civil registry office” (hereinafter referred as the CR office). Citizens of Ukraine, in order to legalize their relationships, submit their passports and an application of a certain form to the CR office. A foreigner, in order to register a marriage, besides the application and a passport, has to provide a document, confirming the legitimacy of his/her staying in the territory of Ukraine. The documents provided by the foreigner should be translated into Ukrainian and notarized. If the foreign citizen does not know Ukrainian, the marriage registration should be conducted in the presence of a certified translator of the relevant language. Citizens, being in a marriage before, should additionally provide an attested copy of document, confirming that the previous marriage is invalid. Documents, according to which a marriage entry is canceled and the marriage is recognized invalid, are court judgement, certificate of death of one of the parties or certificate of divorce. In the process of marriage registration the CR office consummates a marriage case in a hard copy and registers the entry in electronic register. Newly-weds may preserve their surnames, may take a surname of a bridegroom or a bride or combine their surnames. A combined surname is called “double” and is recorded through a dash, for example, Akhmat-Novikov. If the parties or one of the parties at the time of marriage have / has already had a “double” surname, then one of the surname parts is changed. In conclusion of the marriage solemnization two Certificates of Marriage are issued, one for the bride and one for the bridegroom. Bridegroom’s and bride’s Certificates differ only by the serial numbers of forms. Until 2016 only one certificate was issued for newly married in Ukraine. Certificate of Marriage in Ukraine is issued only in Ukrainian. A replacement Certificate of Marriage in Ukraine is not issued, if the marriage was dissolved and the entry on marriage dissolution was registered in the Civil Registry Office of Ukraine. In this case CR offices issue an extract on marriage.
